Search Engine Algorithm:

How Important Is It?

April 20, 2020

What is a Search Engine Algorithm?

Search Engines like Google and Bing, use algorithms – processes or a set of rules to be followed – in order to  calculate the importance or ranking of a web page. These algorithms are used to present the most relevent and useful search results to a user in a fraction of a second based on hundreds of billions of webpages.

Search Engines look at various aspects of a webpage and weigh each factor differently in order to create an algorithm that is fair and delivers qualitative information.

Some of the factors that web designers and web developers should pay attention to include webpage performance, quality of content, keywords and keyword phrases (that match the user query), webpage usability or UX – User Experience (how easy is it to navigate a webpage), geographic location, dynamic content, inbound, outbound and internal links, webpage tags, image alt tags, sitemaps, social, robots.txt, meta data…just to name a few.

The algorithm (amount of weight that is applied to each factor in order to determine where your webpage ends up on the search engine results pages (SERP), can change 500-600 times per year with major ‘core’ changes occurring only a few times each year (typically once per quarter).

 How Important are Algorithms?

A Search Engine algorithm could make or break your website goals. It is important to stay up to date with when the core updates are rolling out and be flexible with your marketing strategies because an update could quickly move your webpage from the first page in a search result to the second, third or fourth page or visa versa. When an algorithm update negatively effects your business, you have to be able to change your strategy in order to get your page ranking back to where it once was.

What Should Your Goals Be?

Your goal is to have the search engines display your webpage(s) on the first page of a search result for all relevant search queries. The higher your page ranking, the better your chances of landing on that first page.

Keep in mind that it takes time and effort to improve your page rank. The first step in achieving your goal should be to establish a Search Engine Marketing strategy that includes Search Engine Optimization (SEO – Organic Search), Social Media Marketing (SMM), Email Marketing, and in some cases, Paid Advertising.
